Read More →Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions from OEM engineers and procurement teams about membrane switch design, materials, and production.
What is a membrane switch?
A membrane switch is a thin, flexible electrical circuit printed on polyester (PET) or polycarbonate film. When you press a graphic overlay button, the top circuit layer contacts the bottom layer and completes the circuit. Most control panels on medical devices, industrial equipment, and consumer electronics use membrane switches because they seal out dust and moisture while lasting over 1 million actuations.
How long does custom membrane switch production take?
Standard lead time runs 15 to 20 working days from approved artwork to shipment. Rush orders can ship in 7 to 10 days depending on complexity. The design review and prototyping phase typically adds 3 to 5 days before production begins.
What materials are used in membrane switch construction?
The overlay layer is usually polyester (PET) or polycarbonate, chosen for chemical resistance and optical clarity. Circuit layers use silver or carbon conductive inks printed on PET substrates. Spacer layers, adhesive layers, and optional components like LEDs, tactile metal domes, or EMI shielding are added based on application requirements.
Can membrane switches operate in harsh environments?
Yes. Membrane switches rated to IP67 resist water jets and dust ingress. Operating temperatures range from -40 degrees C to +80 degrees C for standard builds, wider with high-temperature adhesives. UV-resistant inks and hard coatings protect outdoor installations from fading. JASPER builds switches for mining, marine, and military applications where durability is non-negotiable.
What is the minimum order quantity for custom membrane switches?
JASPER accepts orders starting at 100 pieces for standard custom designs. Prototype runs of 5 to 20 pieces are available for design verification before committing to production volumes. Per-unit pricing drops at 500, 1,000, and 5,000 piece breakpoints.
