De arte plano a superficie frontal funcional

Un overlay grafico debe resistir lo que el panel no resiste.

Un overlay grafico es el film plastico impreso que va en el frente de un panel OEM. It carries the icons, legends, and brand marks the operator sees, and it survives the chemicals, abrasion, and UV exposure the panel does not. The artwork your industrial designer drew on screen has to do real work: register to a tactile dome within ±0.10 mm, hold its color through 50,000 actuations, and stay bonded to the sub-panel for the life of the device.

That gap — between a layered .ai file and a part that ships in a medical cart, an HVAC controller, or a mil-spec keypad — is what we close. JASPER manufactures custom graphic overlays as standalone parts and as the top layer of a complete membrane switch assembly. We work from your artwork, not from a template, and we write the review notes back into your file before we cut tooling.

What is a custom graphic overlay?

A custom graphic overlay is a printed, die-cut plastic film manufactured from customer-supplied artwork — typically an Adobe Illustrator file or press-ready PDF — that becomes the front-facing control surface of an OEM panel. The overlay carries printed icons, legends, brand marks, display windows, and embossed key features on a single sheet of polyester (PET) or polycarbonate (PC) film, backed with a 3M pressure-sensitive adhesive. It is not a stocked part: every project chooses its own film, print method, window treatment, key feature set, adhesive, and compliance target. JASPER reviews incoming artwork against six pre-tooling checks, issues a digital proof and Pantone draw-down for color sign-off, and ships a first-article build before releasing the production run.

What We Personalizadoize

Six dimensions — every project chooses its own build.

None of these are stocked configurations. Each project selects a film, a print method, a window treatment, a key feature set, an adhesive, and a compliance target. Most of the conversation on the first call is about which axis matters most for your application.

01 — Substrate / Film

Autotex / Autoflex polyester (PET), Lexan / Makrofol polycarbonate (PC); 0.125 mm – 0.508 mm (5 mil – 20 mil) thickness. A medical infusion pump panel sprayed with isopropyl alcohol every shift drives material choice toward Autotex V200 polyester. An outdoor EV charging station drives the conversation toward UV-stable hardcoats.

02 — Printing

Screen print and digital UV; Pantone spot color matching; second-surface and selective first-surface; transparent inks for backlit windows. CMYK-only files route to digital UV.

03 — Windows & Displays

Clear, tinted, anti-glare matte, EMI/RFI shielded, dead-front legends — each window treated for the display technology behind it.

04 — Key Features

Rim emboss, pillow emboss, selective hardcoat, textured finishes, tactile dome registration, and edge-lit windows. A semi-truck cab keypad rated to operate from −40 °C to +85 °C drives the build toward Autotex F200XE with a Lexan 8B35 polycarbonate sub-layer.

05 — Adhesive

3M 467MP (2 mil), 3M 468MP (5 mil), 3M 9088 / 9088FL, 3M 9472LE; full-coverage, selective, or kiss-cut application. An outdoor EV charging station drives the conversation toward 3M 9088FL acrylic adhesive for long-term UV and temperature cycling.

06 — Compliance

reconocimiento de etiqueta UL 969, UL 94 V-0 substrates, RoHS / REACH, IP54 / IP65 sealing when bonded to the sub-panel. We do not ask designers to learn our internal process — we ask what the panel has to survive, then we propose a build that gets there.

Revision de arte

Six checks before we quote tooling.

We review every incoming artwork file against six criteria. JASPER checks every artwork file against six pre-flight criteria before quoting tooling. Accepted file formats: Adobe Illustrator (.ai, CS6 and later), press-ready PDF (PDF/X-1a or PDF/X-4 per ISO 15930), and EPS. Raster elements should land at 300 dpi at final size. Outline all fonts before you send — we do not chase missing typefaces.

Use this PDF to check artwork files before tooling quotation:

CheckThresholdWhy it matters
Minimum line width≥ 0.25 mm (0.010 in) printed; ≥ 0.18 mm (0.007 in) reverse-outBelow this, ink coverage breaks up at the edges
Spot color count≤ 8 Pantone spot colors per sideEach color is a separate screen / print pass; CMYK-only files route to digital UV
Transparency / overprintFlatten transparency; set explicit knockouts and trapsLive transparency causes RIP shifts that move legends a few thousandths off the dome
RegistrationPrint-to-die ±0.25 mm (0.010 in); print-to-print ±0.10 mm (0.004 in)Tighter than this needs a registration-corrected die — flag it before tool cutting
Adhesive gapPrinted graphics ≥ 1.5 mm (0.060 in) from adhesive perimeterPrevents ink edge bleed when the overlay is laminated to the sub-panel
Cut shapeDie line on separate spot color (CutContour); inside corner radii ≥ 0.5 mmSharp inside corners propagate cracks at the edge — radius them in artwork, not in tooling

Personalizado graphic overlay questions

What file formats does JASPER accept for custom graphic overlay artwork?

We accept Adobe Illustrator (.ai) files saved in CS6 or later, press-ready PDF (PDF/X-1a or PDF/X-4 per ISO 15930), and EPS. Vector elements are preferred for icons, legends, and the die line. Embedded raster artwork (photos, halftone gradients) needs to be 300 dpi at final printed size. Fonts should be outlined or supplied as packaged OpenType / TrueType files. We can work from a CorelDRAW export if it round-trips cleanly to PDF/X, but we will send back any file we cannot ripple cleanly through Illustrator before we quote.

Can I order custom graphic overlays without a membrane switch?

Yes. Roughly a third of our overlay orders ship as standalone parts — laminated to a customer’s own metal sub-panel, applied to an injection-molded fascia, or used as a replacement service part for an existing assembly in the field. Standalone overlays still go through the same artwork review, the same printed and embossed feature set, and the same 3M adhesive options as the top layer of a full membrane switch. The only thing that changes is what is underneath: no printed circuit, no tactile dome, no termination tail. If you are evaluating both paths, our graphic overlays and control panel overlays pages cover the standalone configurations in more detail.

What’s the artwork-to-production process for a custom graphic overlay?

Six steps:
1. Artwork in. You send your .ai or PDF, the panel drawing or STEP file, and the application notes (chemicals, temperature range, expected actuations).
2. Review and quote. We red-line the artwork against the six checks above and quote tooling, MOQs, and lead time.
3. Digital proof and color match. We issue a PDF proof for legend layout and a printed Pantone draw-down for color sign-off.
4. First-article build. We cut the die, print one short run, emboss, laminate adhesive, and ship samples for fit and tactile sign-off.
5. Production. We release the production run on your approved first article.
6. Inspection and ship. Each lot ships with a first-article inspection report and a certificate of conformance.

Artwork-to-first-article is typically 10–15 working days; production lead time depends on quantity and finishing. Detail on each stage lives on the graphic overlay printing capability page.

Ready to turn your design into a production overlay?

Send your artwork and a short note about where the overlay will live — chemicals, temperature range, expected actuations, and any compliance the end product carries (UL 969, IP65, medical 60601, automotive IATF 16949). We will come back with a marked-up artwork review, recommended materials and adhesives, and a quote.
