Lasergravierte Silikontastaturen

A laser-etched silicone keypad uses a beschichtetes Silikon key and a laser-marked legend to create durable symbols, often for backlit controls. The laser removes the top coating in precise areas so translucent silicone can show through, or so a contrasting base color appears under the coating. JASPER uses laser-etched silicone keypads when OEM products need sharp icons, day/night readability, abrasion resistance, and stable graphics on molded keys.

Why Laser Etching Is Used on Silicone Keypads

Printed legends can work well on silicone keypads, especially for simple color marks and lower-wear products. But some products need symbols that survive repeated touching, cleaning, glove friction, oil, sweat, and years of use.

Lasergravur solves a different problem from ordinary printing. Instead of placing ink on top of the key, the process removes a coating layer from the molded silicone surface. If the base silicone is translucent, the opened legend can illuminate from an LED below. If the base silicone is a contrasting color, the legend appears as a permanent-looking mark through the coating.

This makes laser-etched silicone keypads especially useful for:

  • Backlit icons and night-use controls
  • Automotive and transportation buttons
  • Medical and laboratory devices cleaned often
  • Industrial controls used with gloves
  • Remote controls and handheld instruments with high-use keys
  • Produkte where printed legends may wear too quickly

Lasergravur is not automatically better for every keypad. It is best when the product needs the durability or illuminated-symbol control that coating removal provides.

Typical Laser-Etched Keypad Stack

Layer or featurePurposeDesign note
Silicone baseProvides molded key shape and, when needed, light transmissionTranslucent or colored silicone is selected before tooling and coating.
Opaque coatingBlocks light and creates the top surface colorCoating thickness affects laser quality and light blocking.
Laser-etched legendOpens the icon, text, number, or symbolLaser power and focus must avoid rough edges or silicone damage.
Optional PU/top coatingAdds abrasion and chemical resistanceMust stay compatible with the laser process and final appearance.
LED and circuit carrierProvides illumination for hinterleuchtete BeschriftungenLED location must match legend position and key geometry.

For backlit keypads, laser etching and LED layout must be planned together. A perfect laser mark can still look poor if the LED is in the wrong place.

Laser Etching vs Pad Printing

How legend is madeLaser removes coating to reveal base silicone or light pathInk is printed onto key surface
Best forBacklit symbols, high-use legends, day/night controlsColor graphics, simple icons, non-backlit designs
Wear behaviorLegend is less exposed because it is created through coating removalInk layer may need protective coating for high-wear keys
Color flexibilityUsually controlled by coating and base colorMore flexible multi-color printing

Many keypads use both: pad printing for logos or colored markings, laser etching for illuminated key legends, and a protective coating over high-touch areas.

What We Control During Laser-Etched Keypad Production

Coating system

The coating must bond to silicone, block light, accept laser marking, and survive the product environment. A coating that looks good in a sample can fail if it is not matched to cleaning chemicals, UV exposure, oil, or abrasion.

Laser parameters

Laser power, speed, focus, and pass count affect edge sharpness, icon brightness, and substrate damage. Too little energy leaves haze or incomplete opening. Too much energy burns the silicone or makes rough symbol edges.

Icon size and line width

Very fine legends may look good on artwork but lose clarity after coating, laser etching, and backlighting. We review minimum line width, spacing, and icon shape before production.

Light transmission

For hinterleuchtete Beschriftungen, the etched opening must transmit enough light without creating glare or hot spots. This depends on silicone color, coating opacity, LED position, key thickness, and any diffuser or spacer in the assembly.

Surface protection

High-use keypads may need PU coating or another topcoat system for abrasion resistance. The final stack must be validated as a system, not as separate print, laser, and coating operations.

Common Problems Laser Etching Prevents — and Can Create

ProblemHow laser etching helpsWhat still needs control
Printed legend wears offLegend is made by opening coating rather than adding ink onlyCoating must still resist wear around the legend
Backlit icon looks fuzzyLaser can create crisp symbol edgesLaser focus and coating thickness must be consistent
Day/night mismatchSame icon can work with LED on and offCoating color and base silicone must be selected carefully
Light bleeds around keyOpaque coating blocks unwanted glowHousing and spacer may still need light blocking
Fine symbols lose detailLaser can mark small featuresArtwork must respect realistic line width and spacing

Lasergravur is a precision process, but it is not a shortcut around optical design. It works best when the keypad, coating, PCB, LED, and housing are developed together.

Best Anwendungen

Lasergravierte Silikontastaturen fit products where the legend is part of the product’s usability and safety:

  • Automotive seat controls, steering controls, console switches, and illuminated buttons
  • Medical devices with repeated cleaning and low-light operation
  • Industrial controllers where gloves and abrasion are common
  • Marine and outdoor electronics exposed to moisture and UV
  • Security systems, access panels, and night-use devices
  • Premium remote controls and handheld test instruments

FAQ

What is a laser-etched silicone keypad?

A laser-etched silicone keypad is a molded silicone keypad with legends created by laser marking through a coating layer. The laser removes selected areas of the coating to reveal a contrasting silicone color or translucent silicone for backlighting.

Is laser etching better than printing on silicone keys?

Lasergravur is better when the keypad needs durable legends, backlit icons, or day/night readability. Pad printing is often better for multi-color graphics, lower-wear labels, or designs that do not need illuminated symbols. Many OEM keypads use both methods.

Can laser-etched silicone keypads be backlit?

Yes. This is one of the most common reasons to use laser etching. A translucent silicone base is coated with an opaque color, then the icon is laser-etched so LED light can pass through only the marked area.

What files do you need for lasergravierte Beschriftungen?

Vector artwork is preferred for icons, numbers, text, and symbols. We also need key dimensions, target color, illuminated color, LED location if available, and the product environment so coating and laser parameters can be selected correctly.

Get Laser-Etched Legends Right Before Sampling

Send your icon artwork, color target, LED plan, and expected wear environment. We will review whether the keypad should use laser etching, pad printing, coating, backlighting, or a combination of these processes.
